Summary

A spiritually uplifting and beautiful designed visual memoir by the hugely popular photographer on Instagram, Joe Greer, combining thoughtful essays and more than 100 gorgeous landscape photos--half fan favorites, and half never-before-seen。

"Each photograph really does come down to a split second when you decide to freeze that moment in time。 。 。 。 You ask yourself what the story is that you want to tell, and let the rest unfold: Click。"--from the introduction

Joe Greer never imagined he would become a photographer。

Raised in Florida by an aunt and uncle after his mother's death when he was four, Joe had a seemingly normal childhood, spending summers at church camp and dreaming of going to college。 But nearly fifteen years later, the ground shifted beneath his feet when he discovered a family secret that would impact the rest of his life。

Trying to make sense of that revelation and what it meant for his future, Greer set his sights on becoming a pastor at Spokane's Moody Bible Institute。 There, he discovered Instagram--and a passion for photography。 His pictures of the lush, wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest landscape attracted a large following that has grown to more than three quarters of a millions fans and continues to expand。

The Lay of the Land is Joe's story in words and pictures。 In this stunning compendium, he reflects on the trauma of his early life and what photography has taught him: how to find his light; how to slow down; how to appreciate the world around him, a reverence for the nature world that that both nurtures and amplifies his creativity and faith; how to love--his photography led him to his wife, Madison--and how to heal。 For Joe, photography has been a way to find purpose, better understand his faith, and express himself。 Though he began with landscapes, meeting his wife sparked a new love of portraiture, and he turned to making photos of street scenes that explored his complicated feelings about family。

A love letter to the natural world, to faith, and to finding your calling in the most unexpected places, The Lay of the Land is a window into the beautiful mind and heart of one of the internet's favorite photographers。 Moving and inspiring, it is a creative and spiritual journey that offers lessons on life and living。 As Greer reminds us all, whatever it is you want, it's up to you to make the moment (and the photograph)。

I am obviously biased because joe greer is absolutely my favorite photographer and a consistent source of inspiration。 However, this book goes beyond his photography work and joe tells the story of his past intertwined with photography。 Really enjoyable and sort of an emotional rollercoaster read but really come to appreciate joe even more because of who he is and his story。

Reading about Joe’s life and his walk with Jesus was so inspiring。 I had not heard of Joe before receiving his book and was blown away by his photography。 The various landscape photos throughout are absolutely stunning。 Throughout the book, he highlights significant parts of his life, and how he became a photographer。 It was fascinating to hear about his untraditional journey into photography and how the challenges of his childhood impact his outlook on life。 Overall, this was a beautiful memoir Reading about Joe’s life and his walk with Jesus was so inspiring。 I had not heard of Joe before receiving his book and was blown away by his photography。 The various landscape photos throughout are absolutely stunning。 Throughout the book, he highlights significant parts of his life, and how he became a photographer。 It was fascinating to hear about his untraditional journey into photography and how the challenges of his childhood impact his outlook on life。 Overall, this was a beautiful memoir that makes me want to see more of Joe’s photography。 Thank you so much to Harper Collins for providing me with a copy of the lay of the land by Joe Greer! 。。。more

This book is truly a journey through Joe’s life and how photography has helped him grow, develop, and heal。 He is an amazing artist and it’s incredible how much has grown during his career。 I know personally that Joe is the same in person as he seems in the book- very much a deep thinker and insightful person always looking for the beauty。 The books lays out his childhood and battles into his adult life where he finds faith and photography along with Madison。 My only negative is that Joe is so w This book is truly a journey through Joe’s life and how photography has helped him grow, develop, and heal。 He is an amazing artist and it’s incredible how much has grown during his career。 I know personally that Joe is the same in person as he seems in the book- very much a deep thinker and insightful person always looking for the beauty。 The books lays out his childhood and battles into his adult life where he finds faith and photography along with Madison。 My only negative is that Joe is so well known for his street photography and there is none at all in this book- is all landscape photography。 I would have loved to see how his style changed through these processes instead of just his photos now (I understand their desire to keep the book true to him now but a photo from each phase would have been incredible), however I do believe that Joe will release more books and continue to grow!! 。。。more

I preordered this book months ago because Joe's landscape photography is tremendous, I wanted to be able to see those photos in print。 And the book turned out beautifully。 In the book he highlights important parts of his life's story。 He has had an eventful, challenging journey in the midst of all his success。 He is a grateful person despite the hardships, and that comes through very clearly through his writing and his photography。 I read this book the same day I got it in the mail, and I'll pro I preordered this book months ago because Joe's landscape photography is tremendous, I wanted to be able to see those photos in print。 And the book turned out beautifully。 In the book he highlights important parts of his life's story。 He has had an eventful, challenging journey in the midst of all his success。 He is a grateful person despite the hardships, and that comes through very clearly through his writing and his photography。 I read this book the same day I got it in the mail, and I'll probably return to it many times over to skim through his photos and life story。 。。。more

Joes photography and musings about his life and work are so inspiring。 Managed to easily power through this entire thing in one night。 Can’t wait to dive in again to spend time on the brilliant photographs inside。

Beautiful photos and I enjoyed hearing about Joe’s untraditional path to photography。 But I’m surprised and disappointed that he didn’t write at all about getting into film photography specifically。 Also couldn’t personally connect with any of the religious stuff but can understand the impact on his work。
